                                                                                            REMARKS.

180.—This man died of exhaustion, the result of protracted paroxysm of maniacal excitement. Convulsions occurred before death. The brain was
singularly soft, and there was a large serous effusion beneath the arachnoid. The base of each lung was in the first stage of pneumonia.
The solitary glands in cœcum were enlarged, but no ulceration of any part of the intestinal canal was observed. The heart was contracted, and
there was an absence of fat in its walls, as there was in the body generally.
229—Was admitted into hospital the day of his arrival at the asylum with dysentery and fever. The mucous membrane of large intestines was
one uniform mass of sloughing ulceration. The ilium was much congested. The spleen was enlarged.
238—Was picked up in the streets in an insane state. Was admitted into hospital on arrival; but his case was a hopeless one. Two circular
gangrenous patches were found at the base of right lung; the pulmonary tissue being disorganised and putrid. The spleen was atrophied ; the liver
deeply congested. No ulceration of the bowels existed.
233—Was attacked with cholera on the afternoon of the 25th July, and died of urœmia at mid-day on the 30th. In the cœcum the solitary
glands were enlarged, and a few ulcerated. In the large intestines.were innumerable small ulcers, generally round, with sloughing surfaces.
67—Was under treatment for enlargement of liver, constipation, and general debility. On the 24th July he vomited frequently; this was followed
by fever. The abdomen was hard and tender, and the pulse weak and rapid. He died on the 8th August. The liver was of enormous size, soft, blood-
less, and of a bright yellow colour. It weighed 4 lb 5 ounces. Large portions of the peritonium were black; in the midst of which were hard tuber-
cular masses. In cœcum a tubercular ulcer was found. Both lungs were healthy.
68—Was admitted into hospital on the 3rd August with fever and dysentery. His urine was tested, and large quantities of albumen were found in
it. He died on the 8th. Large tubercular masses were found in both lungs. In ilium were numerous unhealthy ulcers. In colon raised circular ulcers
found. Both kidneys were atrophied. The pyramids were almost destroyed, and the cortical substance was pale and fatty.
230—Was in hospital recovering from an attack of dysentery, when he suddenly became comatose and died. A considerable quantity of extrava-
sated blood was found at the base of the brain. The duramater was unusually thick and tough. No ulceration of the bowels was found. The brain-
weighed only 2lb 1 ounce, although the boy was 17 years old.
57—Had attempted to drown herself on several occasions before she arrived at the asylum. Constant watch was kept on her. She became gradu-
ally more cheerful, showing remarkable affection to a child she was nursing. On the afternoon of the 18th August she went to the well, where another
female lunatic was drawing water; in a moment, she forced herself through the opening in the wooden covering of the well, which was only 22 inches
by 17, and before the lid could be got off she was drowned. A judicial inquiry was made, but no blame was imputed to any one.
186 —Had for months been wasting away. The brain was anæmic, and there was much serous effusion beneath the arachnoid. On the top of each
hemisphere were several patches of deposit, apparently tubercular. The lungs were also infiltrated with miliary tubercles. The mesenteric glands were
enlarged and indurated.
217—Was almost constantly in hospital, where he passed 169 lumbrici. On the 18th August was re-admitted with diarrhœa and debility. The
intestines were healthy, with the exception of the rectum, which was ulcerated throughout. There was a milky, serous effusion beneath the arachnoid,
and the ventricles contained more than a healthy quantity of fluid. The lungs were healthy,
243—Was admittied into hospital on the 21st August with strong fever. Pneumonia of the right lung was detected. It was of an acute type, and
diarrhœa was also present. Pneumonia of apex of right lung, with great ædema, was found after death. The ilium and large intestines throughout were
congested, and in rectum were a few circular ulcers. The pelvis of right kidney was distended, forming a large cavity, in which an irregular calculus
and numerous smaller ones lay. The whole mass weighed 2 drachms 32 grains. The left kidney was healthy, and there was no stone in the bladder.
204—Was treated for articular rheumatism and syphilitic cachexia. He died very suddenly. Large decolorised clots were found in the right
ventricle and pulmonary artery. Both kidneys were diseased. There was chronic gastritis ; but the small intestines were healthy throughout. The
ascending colon was of a deep red colour, and the solitary glands were enlarged and prominent. The lungs were normal.
107—Was a permanent inmate of hospital. Fever, jaundice, and bloodlessness, were his chief ailments. Cod-liver oil and steel benefited him and
prolonged his life.
A large cavity was found in apex of right lung, which, as well as the left, was generally disorganised by miliary tubercular matter undergoing
softening. The mesenteric glands were also diseased.
289—On the 11th September was admitted into hospital with inflammation of the left lung; this was followed by hæmoptysis and epistaxis.
the left frontal sinus a large suppurating cavity was found. Miliary tubercles were disseminated through apex of right lung. At base on left
side several large unhealthy cavities surrounded by patches of low inflammation were found; while the apex was dotted over with masses of crude
