Types of insanity.

Fallacy in this re-
turn.

23. Types of Insanity.—The events of 1871 classified under the various types of insanity
are shown in statement No. 9. 55.2 per cent. of those admitted manifested acute types of
insanity, 37.5 of the total treated had been admitted in a state of acute insanity, against 36.0
of 1870, and 32.3 of 1869. It would be more correct to show the actual phase of insanity
which the lunatics exhibited during the year than to retain as a description of their mental
state the term which was used to denote the mental condition on admission. Most acute
lunatics, if they do not recover or die within the first few months of admission, lapse into a
state of chronic mania or dementia, and it is right that this should be shown, because many of
the cases and results now registered under acute mania ought properly to be shown in the
columns of chronic insanity. Superintendents will be instructed to alter their returns
accordingly for the future.

Recoveries accord-
ing to type of
insanity.

As regards cures, the data noted in this statement show that the highest rates of
recoveries took place under acute mania; acute dementia, melancholia, chronic mania, and
chronic dementia following. The largest proportionate number of persons discharged
otherwise had been admitted for melancholia; acute mania, chronic mania, and chronic demen-
tia following.

Deaths according
to type of in-
sanity.

The death-rate was highest among chronic dements; acute dementia, chronic mania,
melancholia, and acute mania following. This result is remarkable, and not what might have
been anticipated The deductions are, however, vitiated by the circumstance above noted.
