preparing it for cultivation, which will, although no money return was credited to the
institution, prove of great advantage from surrounding the asylum with a cleared open piece
of ground of considerable extent.

5. The management of the asylum is most satisfactory : the insanes are kindly and
judiciously treated ; they are encouraged to work, which is not made a task, but done with
a willing and cheerful spirit. All their material comforts are sedulously attended to. Mr.
Blackwell, the overseer, has a most kindly and pleasant manner with the insanes, and is
evidently regarded by them with confidence. The superintendent reports very favorably of
his attention to his duties, his gentleness and tact. The native doctor, Sheikh Kurreem
Bux, is also favorably mentioned. From repeated visits to the asylum, the undersigned has
had opportunities to acquaint himself thoroughly with the working of the institution, and
concurs thoroughly with the opinions expressed by the superintendent, and also with the
remarks of the visitors, respecting the excellent management of the institution, and the
improvements that are being carried out.
