12. Criminal Lunatics.—The number of criminal lunatics, confined in each
Asylum, is shown as follows:—

13.    Nagpur Asylum.—Of the thirteen shown under column " discharged,
transferred," &c., 5 were sent back to Jail, 1 was made over to his friends under
the Chief Commissioner's order, 1 escaped, 4 were sent to stand their trial, and 2
were discharged on expiry of their sentences. Two died during the year. At
the close of the year, therefore, 54 remained in the Asylum.

14.    Jubbulpore Asylum.—Of the six shown as " discharged and transferred,"
2 were sent to stand their trial, 2 were transferred to the non-criminal list
on the expiry of their sentences, and 2 were discharged by order of the Chief
Commissioner. Three died during the year. The number remaining on the
roll at the close of the year was thus 31.

15.    A considerable increase in the daily average number of criminal luna-
tics confined in the Jubbulpore Asylum has occurred during the past two years,
but a decrease in the average number in the Nagpur Asylum was recorded in
1897. The daily average number was 57.08 in Nagpur and 35.44 in Jubbul-
pore, as compared with 64.90 and 34.28 respectively in 1896.

                                        STATEMENT III.

16. Religion and Sex.—Of the total number of admissions into both the
Asylums, 41 were Hindus, 12 Mahomedans, 2 Native Christians and 7 were of
other castes. The percentage of females to males was 19.
