The average sick in hospital was .89.
Treatment.—This (my predecessor states) consists of "nothing new; strict atten-
tion is paid to moral and hygienic measures; they are well fed and care taken
that they get their food; abundant occupation is provided and exercise insisted
on. I find the cold douche the best calmative. Drugs as potassium bromide,
chloral, cannabis Indica, tinct. opii, &c., are used. There is no restraint during
the day, however violent the patient may be; these are simply watched. At nights
the noisy, violent, filthy are placed in cells by themselves."
I think that the above treatment the best that can be adopted.
Diet is good; cost 3 annas per head. The contract for diet has been changed
from the calendar year to the official year, so as to tally with the annual report, &c.
Occupation.—Same as last year, viz., out-door gardening, bringing part of the
Asylum grounds under cultivation; in-door weaving, coir mat making, tailoring,
carpentering, &c. 484 yards of good dungaree were manufactured, in value Rupees
151-4-0; 10 coir rolls were made, value Rs. 22-8-0.
Amusements.—Also the same as last year, viz., native musical instruments are
provided; also native games, like chess, draughts, &c.; the patients are taken for
walks; native sweetmeats, fruits, &c., are also given occasionally to the inmates.
Rupees 32-8-11 were expended under this head.
Buildings are in a fair state of repair. Rupees 310 were received depart-
mentally on an estimate duly submitted to Government for repairs. The work was
done satisfactorily with a saving of Rupees 32, which was spent in plastering the
walls of wards and verandahs, asphalting wards and latrines, &c.
Water-supply.—Regarding the water-supply, I cannot report fully on the sub-
ject as two wells are under construction. The present supply is barely enough ;
what there is is good. A full report will be submitted on the completion of the
wells.
The accompanying eleven statements show in detail the statistics of the Asylum
for the year. Rupees 147-12-6 was obtained by lunatic labor, and out of this
Rupees 80-11-7 was lodged in the treasury; the balance was spent in providing
amusement, &c., for the inmates, purchase of necessaries for the Asylum, &c.
