was detected during the Show. As this Show was so successful, it may be useful
if I record somewhat in detail what was done, so as to assist any officer who
may desire to encourage cattle improvements by similar means:—

(a)  The Show was held in a large garden belonging to Babu Kumoda
Kinkar Mukerji of Suri.

(b)   In order to make the fair attractive to the people, a mahabutkhana
was erected at the entrance gate, upon which a native band
played from 17th to the 20th January. Flags of various
colours were planted on both sides of the road, which runs from
the gate to the southern extremity of the garden, where the
enclosure for the show of cattle was erected.

(c)  At about 5 P. m. of 18th January 1897 a meeting was held in the
garden, presided over by the Collector of Birbhum, when the
objects of the fair were explained in Bengali to the people by
the Secretary and the fair was declared open.

(d)  The judging of animals was finished by the afternoon of the
second day of the mêla. In the evening of that day foot-
races, cart races, &c., were held in the compound of the District
Judge near the mêla ground. On the morning of the third
day the cattle selected for prizes were decorated with rosettes
and ribbons.

(e)  The prizes were distributed at 4 p. m. on the third day in the pre-
sence of all the European residents of the station. The
number of natives present was computed at 7,000.
(f) In the evening of the third day pony races were held in the com-
pound of the District Judge. After nightfall there was. a
display of fireworks.

(g) The total amount realised by way of subscription was Rs. 772-8,
and the following expenditure was incurred:—

89.    The balance in the hands of the Managing Committee was
Rs. 117-12-6.

90.    I have recommended that a sum of Rs. 150 be granted from funds to
assist the Managing Committee next year.

91.    Berhampore.—I attended this Fair and Show on the 1st, 2nd and
3rd of March. Berhampore is well suited for both purposes, from a veteri-
nary point of view. The chief feature in the fair is one which does not
exist at any other that I have visited, namely, that the fair ground is enclosed
by wire and a small fee charged for an admission of cattle, &c.

92.     The numbers present were as follows in 1897:—

18,662
