                                          Bovine Diseases.

25.     Rinderpest took a comparatively heavy toll on bovines during
the year. It was prevalent more or less throughout the province and
accounted for 93 per cent. of the total mortality. The districts which
suffered most seriously on this account were Bakarganj, Khulna,
Chittagong, Tippera, Faridpur, Birbhum and Pabna.

The advantages of inoculation against this disease are being
gradually realised by the ryots, and it is gratifying to note that, with
the exception of Birbhum, extra assistance was asked for and obtained
by the authorities in the other districts to organise inoculation cam-
paigns in the affected localities.

26.     Foot and Mouth.—As usual, this disease caused a very few
deaths, the total number being 442, as against 591 in the previous
year.

27.     Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia broke out badly in the district of
Midnapore, where 464 animals were reported to have succumbed to it.
Inoculation was undertaken with success to prevent the spread of the
disease after the diagnosis had been confirmed by bacteriological
examination.

28.     Blackquarter.—Only 27 deaths were reported, as against 542
in the preceding year.

29.     Anthrax occurred in nine districts and carried away 85 animals,
as against 210 in the previous year. The loss was highest in the dis-
trict of Mymensingh, where 27 deaths occurred.

30.    Other Contagious Diseases.—Considerable less mortality is
noticed under this head. In all 268 animals died, as against 759 in
the preceding year.

31.    Contagious Diseases amongst Other Animals.—These include
such diseases as rabies and distemper in canines, fowl cholera, etc.
One hundred and twelve animals are reported to have died, as against
402 in the previous year.

                                   Preventive Inoculation.

32.     Table III shows the record of preventive inoculations performed
during the year.

33.     Inoculation was undertaken in 1,152 outbreaks and 206,616
animals were inoculated, as against 173,762 animals in 966 outbreaks in
the preceding year. The details of inoculation are as follows:—
