                              FAIRS AND SHOWS.

78. As usual, the important horse and cattle fairs and shows
in the province were attended by the staff. A striking feature
of the year was the organization of a livestock exhibition and
show at the Sonepur Eair in which the local officers took keen
interest. A special staff was deputed by the department to give
every possible help. The proposed exhibition was ultimately
abandoned owing to the opposition of interested parties, but a
modified cattle show was held, and the work done by the depart-
mental staff was greatly appreciated. There was an outbreak of
rinderpest at this fair which was speedily checked by the veteri-
nary officers on duty. Help was given by the department in
the purchase of an elephant and a pony for the Bahadurpur Court
of Wards Estate, and of 2 pairs of bullocks for the Conservator
of Forests. The Officiating Director, Mr. Garewal, paid a visit to
the Sonepur Fair, while Special Officer,'Mr. Malik, visited Sonepur,
Sitamarhi and Khagra, and acted as one of the judges at the
shows held in each of these fairs.

79. 1,902 animals were booked to different places from the
Sonepur district of the Bengal and North-Western Railway.

80. The particulars of animals and their prices, etc., are
shown in Tables XIII and XIV. Except in the case of buffaloes
there has been a marked decrease in the number of horses and
cattle at these fairs.
