sardar and 3 sardars, 1 fireman, 1 forgeman, 4 chaukidars,
2 office peons, and the menials paid from contingencies. No
change Occurred during the year.

65. Livestock.—On the 1st of April 1930, the farm herd
consisted of 130 desi cows, 46 Tharparkar cows, 68 desi calves
(male), 66 desi calves (female), 46 Tharparkar calves (male),

61  Tharparkar calves (female), 58 cross-bred calves (male),

62 cross-bred calves (female), 4 Tharparkar bulls, 42 draught
bullocks and 1 pony, or a total of 584 animals. During the year
31 Tharparkar and 91 cross-bred calves were born on the farm
raising the total to 706. Out of this number there were 22
casualties and 139 animals (bullocks 62, country heifers 37,
Tharparkar heifers 21, cross-bred heifers 28 and cross-bred bull
1) were sold, leaving the total strength of the herd at 545 at the
end of the year. The average number of cows in milk per
day during the year was 88.

The Principal reports that the total number of cattle appears
to be more than the land can carry and should be reduced. It is
apparently impossible to sell stock until it reaches the age of
about 2 years, and after feeding for 2 years the price realized by
sale is by no means proportionate to the cost of rearing ; further,
a large number of young stock reduced the amount of food
for consumption by matured animals. Reports from owners
of animals purchased at the last sale are however favourable and
possibly enhanced prices will be offered at future sales.

66. Milk and milk products.—The total milk yield during
the year was 32,330 lbs. or an average of 7.3 lbs. per cow per
day. In addition, 14,331 lbs. of milk was purchased during
the cold weather to meet the demands as the milk yield was
greatly reduced owing to severe outbreaks of foot and mouth
disease at the farm on several occasions.

67. The total quantity of milk sold during the year was
219,142 lbs. against 192,447 lbs. in the year 1929-30 ; 463 lbs.
of cream and 214 lbs. of ghee were also sold during the year.
Out of the balance of 27,519 lbs. of milk, 4,600 lbs. was lost
in pasteurisation, measuring and bottling, etc., 9,000 lbs. was
separated for cream and the remaining 13,919 lbs. was fed to
the calves. The loss of milk in pasteurising, bottling, etc., would
appear to be on the large side, but every effort is made to stop
waste.

68.  Cultivation.—The total area of land cultivated by the
farm was 296 acres, in addition to which 183 bighas were
leased out at a rental of Rs. 2,724, out of which Rs. 2,383-14-0
was realised during the year and credited to Government. The
