23.   Anthrax.—From this disease 2,202 deaths ware reported from 8 districts
against 757 deaths in 9 districts in the previous year. Anthrax was diagnosed
microscopically in all the plains districts.

24.  Other contagious diseases.—Eleven thousand four hundred and fifty-six
deaths were recorded under this head in 9 districts against 6,784 in 8 districts in the
previous year.

                                              OTHER ANIMALS.

25.   Contagious diseases amongst other animals.—Altogether 6,413 deaths were
reported from 11 districts against 3,377 deaths in 11 districts in the previous year.

                                    PREVENTIVE INOCULATION.

26.  Table III shows the number and the result of preventive inoculations done
in the province during the year under report.

27. Rinderpest.—Inoculations against Rinderpest were carried out in 449 out-
breaks in 17 subdivisions and one Hill district (Khasi and Jaintia Hills). In these
outbreaks 12,542 animals were reported to have died before inoculation. Altogether
38,249 animals were inoculated by the serum alone method. Seven hundred and
thirty deaths were reported amongst the inoculated animals.

In the previous year inoculations wore carried out in 193 outbreaks in 15 subdivi-
sions. In these outbreaks 4,910 animals died before inoculation. The total number of
cattle inoculated was 18,043 of which 240 died after inoculation.

28 The outbreaks of Rinderpest were severe in the districts of Darrang,
Sibsagar, Nowgong and Sylhet, and the greatest number of inoculations was done
in the Darrang district. In the previous year Sunamganj, Habiganj and Silchar
subdivisions showed the largest number of inoculations.

29.  Anthrax.—Sixty-six specimens of suspected Anthrax were received in the
Laboratory of which 52 proved Anthrax. Inoculations were performed in 58
outbreaks in 12 subdivisions. In these outbreaks 5 equines, 382 bovines and 21
others were reported to have died before inoculation. The number of animals
inoculated was 284 equines, 2,634 bovines and 85 others of which 11 bovines
died after inoculation.

In the previous year inoculations were performed in 52 outbreaks in 13 sub-
divisions in which 7 equines, 301 bovines and 10 others died before inoculation ;
248 equines, 2,650 bovines and 4 others were inoculated of which 3 bovines died
subsequently.

30.  The submission of monthly returns of Anthrax outbreaks to the American
Consul General. Calcutta, was continued,

31.  Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia.—The diagnosis of this disease was confirmed
microscopically in 54 cases. Inoculation was undertaken in 33 outbreaks in which
442 bovines and 13 others died before inoculation ; 11 equines, 2,588 bovines and
61 others were inoculated of which 16 bovines died after inoculation.

In the previous year inoculation was performed in 18 outbreaks in which 195
bovines died before inoculation ; 1,696 bovines were inoculated of which 4 animals
were reported to have died subsequently.

32.  Black quarter.—No vaccination was undertaken against this disease during
the year.

33.  The total number of outbreaks in which inoculation was undertaken
during the year under report was 510 of which 5 equines, 13,366 bovines and
34 others died before inoculation; 295 equines, 43,471 bovines and 116 others were
inoculated of which 757 bovines died after inoculation.

In the previous year inoculations were performed in 263 outbreaks in which
7 equines, 5,439 bovines and 10 others died before inoculation : 248 equines, 22,389
bovines and 4 others were inoculated of which 247 bovines died after inoculation.

                            ITINERANT ASSISTANTS' WORK.

31. Table IV shows the work of the Itinerant Veterinary Assistants during
the year under report. They visited 8,957 villages, performed 1,162 castrations
and treated 18,908 cases for contagious diseases and 51,404 cases for non-contagious
diseases. In the preceding year 8,551 villages were visited, 930 animals castrated
