                                                     REPORT

                                                    OF THE

                         CIVIL VETERINARY DEPARTMENT, ASSAM,

                                                FOR THE YEAR

                                                     1922-23.

                        PREFACE. —GENERAL ADMINISTRATION.

During the year under report Mr. Harris, the permanent Superintendent, Civil
Veterinary Department, Assam, held charge of the Department for 8 months and
10 days, and I held charge for the remaining period of the year. He was on tour
for 84 days and travelled 1,834 miles by rail, 470 miles by steamer and 521 miles
by road and country boats.

2.  The following Hospitals and Dispensaries were inspected by him:—
Shillong, Gauhati, Nalbari, Nowgong, Misa, Tezpur, Mangaldai, Tangla, Behali,

Dibrugarh and Tinsukia.

The work of the Veterinary Inspectors of Gauhati and Dibrugarh Circles were
also inspected by him.

3.  Mr. Harris was on special training at Muktesar Imperial Bacteriological
Laboratory for 3 months from July to September 1922 and attended the All-India
Veterinary Conference held at Calcutta from the 26th February to 4th March
1923. He has availed of leave for 9 months from the 21st March 1923.

4.  During my incumbency as Officiating Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Depart-
ment, Assam, I was on tour for 35 days and travelled 1,068 miles by rail, 78 miles
by steamer and 217 miles by road and country boats.

5.  I inspected the following Hospitals and Dispensaries:—

Gauhati, Tangla, Kulaura, Patharkandi, Karimganj, Habiganj, Jagannathpur,
Sunamganj, Sylhet, Silchar, Hailakandi, Narsingpur and Government Veterinary
Hospital at Silchar.

The work of the Veterinary Inspectors of Gauhati and Silchar Circles was
also inspected by me.

6.  As a Deputy Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Department, Assam, I was
on tour for 26 days and travelled 1,696 miles by rail, and 85 miles by road and
country boats.

7.  I inspected the work of the Assistants at Kulaura, Maulvibazar, Sylhet, Silchar,
Narsingpur, Karimganj and the Government Veterinary Hospital at Silchar and
also the work of the Veterinary Inspector of Silchar Circle. In addition to my
own duties of the Deputy Superintendent I had to hold charges of the office of the
Veterinary Inspector, Gauhati Circle, from the 22nd December 1922 to 10th February
1923.

8.  In the Laboratory 538 specimens of various kinds were examined against
420 of last year of which 75 were diagnosed as Surra, 39 as Anthrax and 22 as
Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia.
