No case under the Cruelty to Animals Act was brought to the hospital for
treatment.

A sum of Rs. 364-8-0 was credited to the treasury as dispensary fees as against
Rs. 503-8-0 in the previous year.

                       PART III.—BREEDING OPERATIONS.

35.  Table VIII shows the number of stud bulls reported to have been serving in
this province during the year.

At the beginning of the year there were 13 bulls ; the number at the close of the
year shows an increase of 2. None of the bulls reported under Local Bodies belong to
the Jail Department.

One bull was presented to the Silchar Municipality free of cost by the Hon'ble
Mr. Kamini Kumar Chanda during the year.

                                        FAIRS AND SHOWS.

36.  Table XIV shows the number of cattle fairs and shows held in the province.
There is a slight increase in the total number of stock present as compared with the
previous year.

The Shillong Agricultural show was not held during the year.

                PART IV.—SUBORDINATE ESTABLISHMENT.

37.   Table VII shows the strength of the subordinate staff of the Department
employed during the year 1919-20. At the beginning of the year there were three
Inspectors and thirty-nine Veterinary Assistants. Five new graduates from the
Bengal Veterinary College joined the Department, three Assistants reverted from the
Military Department and the services of one Assistant were dispensed with, and one
Assistant is still on military duty. At the close of the year the total strength was
three Veterinary Inspectors and forty-six Veterinary Assistants.

38.  A brief account of the work performed by the Veterinary Inspectors is given
below: —

       (1) Babu Satya Charan Mukherjee, Veterinary Inspector, Dibrugarh Circle,
            continued to hold charge of the Dibrugarh Circle. He was on tour for
            196 days, travelled 3,112 miles by rail, 1,701 miles by steamer and
            country boats and 1,102 miles by road. He visited and revisited 181
            villages and tea gardens in his enquiry into the result of inoculation and
            investigation of outbreaks of diseases.

      He inspected the following dispensaries and Assistants—Dibrugarh, Tinsukia
            and Nazira six times ; Jorhat and Mariani five times, Golaghat four
            times, Sibsagar, Badlipar, Tezpur, Mangaldai thrice, Behali, North
            Lakhimpur and Dhakuakhana twice and Kohima once. He failed to
            carry out the requisite number of inspections. He attended a Surra
            outbreak at Tezpur and suspected Glanders case at Jorhat. He also
            visited the Agricultural Farm at Jorhat and gave advice regarding the
            stock.

       (2) Babu Srish Chandra Ghosh was in charge of the Surma Valley Circle
            throughout the year. He was on tour for 181 days and travelled 3,535
            miles by rail, 340 miles by steamer and 2,834 miles by road and country
            boat. He inspected the Assistants of his circle in the following way :—

      First Veterinary Assistant, Silchar, Veterinary Assistant, Hailakandi,
            Karimganj, Patharkandi, Sylhet, Srimangal, Habiganj four times,
            Maulvibazar, Sunamganj, 2nd Veterinary Assistant, Hailakandi
            and 2nd Veterinary Assistant, Silchar thrice each and Veterinary
            Assistant, Aijal once. He visited the Karimganj Agricultural Farm
            four times. He attended a suspected Glanders case at Sylhet. He
            also attended outbreaks of Surra under the police stations of Sri-
            mangal, Silchar and Hailakandi. He also supervised the Volunteer
            Camp Hospital at Silchar.
