10.  Breeding.—The two Government bulls, Tippu and Hyder, which are stand-
ing for service at the college have respectively made 55 and 61 coverings between
1st April 1910 and 31st March L911. It has been found impossible to persuade the
owners of cows served to report the birth or submit the calf for our information. I
have therefore instituted the procedure since the 4th December 1910 of collecting
and giving a receipt for Re. 1 at the time of service, this fee being returned to the
owner when he makes a report of the birth of a calf or otherwise. Rupees 28 have
thus been collected. This procedure has not interfered with the number of cover-
ings and it is to be hoped that the return of the rupee will induce owners to report
so that actual results may be obtained.

11.  Attendance and discipline.—During the year one student was suspended
for three months for a breach of discipline, otherwise the behaviour and attendance
of the students have been satisfactory.

12.  Prizes.—The distribution of prizes was held on the 24th March 1911 at
which His Excellency Sir Arthur Lawley, G.C.I.E., K.C.M.G., Governor of Madras,
graciously presided and presented the diplomas and prizes to the successful graduates
and students.

13.  Sports.—The sports were held on the day succeeding the prize distribution.
The silver cups and prizes which were very keenly competed for included a silver
cup kindly presented by His Excellency for the best athlete.

14.  Lucerne.—Two beds of lucerne have been cultivated in the college compound
for the benefit of the hospital.

15.   Hostel.—The college hostel which accommodates twenty-three students has
been full throughout the year.

16.  Recreation ground.—The new piece of land which was acquired for recre-
ation and building purposes has been in the hands of the Public Works Depart-
ment contractor throughout the year and has now been filled up and levelled.

17.  Bacteriological laboratory.—The plans for the Bacteriological laboratory and
the Pharmacy and offices to accommodate the Office of the Superintendent are still
in process of preparation.

                                                           D. A. D. AITCHISON, I.C.V.D.,

                                                                                Principal, Veterinary College.

                              ResolutionNo. 281, dated 1st August 1911.

The Board begs to submit to Government the reports of the Superintendent,
Civil Veterinary Department, and the Principal, Madras Veterinary College, on the
work of the executive and educational branches of the Civil Veterinary Department,
respectively, for the year 1910-1911.

2. Staff.—Mr. Aitchison continued to be in charge of the college throughout
the year. Captain Dawson, who was Superintendent, Civil Veterinary Department, up
to 6th February 1911, was transferred to the Central Provinces and was succeeded
by Mr. Ware from those provinces. Touring and inspection by the late Superintendent
were not satisfactory.
