Table XI.

25. During the year 1,491 mares were covered against 1,336 in the

previous year. The average per stallion was 39.47
against 36.43 last year which shows a satisfactory
improvement considering the season.

Table XII.

26. The average annual cost of maintenance of
the stallions amounted to Rs. 772 per head against
Rs. 726 last year.

The increase is partly due to the higher wages that are being paid to
syces and partly to a general increase in the cost of grain and fodder.

Owing to fodder scarcity it was difficult to make satisfctory arrangements
for grass, etc., no contractors being prepared to undertake the supply at
reasonable rates. I am indebted to Mr. Thomson, Controller of Civil Supplies,
for his assistance in supplying grass.

                               (ii) Donkey stallions.

27.   There is no mule-breeding carried on in the Presidency.

                                    (3) Others.

28.   There is nothing to report under this head.

                              (4) Fairs and Shows.

29.   Owing to prevalence of famine conditions no horse shows were held
this year.

                  IV.— SUBORDINATE ESTABLISHMENT.

Table VII.

30. The strength of the subordinate establish-
ment at the close of year was as follows :—

Veterinary Inspectors ... ...

5

Veterinary Assistants ... ...

89

Veterinary Assistant V. D. Patel proceeded on superannuation pension
and Veterinary Assistant Parmar's services were dispensed with. Veterinary
Assistant Gadagkar was seconded to the Agricultural Department as an
Inspector of Cattle-breeding.

Veterinary Inspector Marathe who was deputed on 7th July 1919 to work
for the Bombay Panjrapole Society reverted to the department on 16th
September 1920.

With one or two exceptional cases of refractory conduct the whole staff
have worked very satisfactorily during the year which has been a particularly
arduous one in the Northern and Central Divisions and it would be difficult
to select any individual cases for special mention.

                  V.—EXPENDITURE OF THE DEPARTMENT

Table XIV-A.

31. The expenditure of the department is
shown in Table XIV-A from information furnished
by the Accountant General.

                              VI.—GENERAL REMARK.

32. While the work has been well maintained at the hospitals, the
year is marked by the opening of eight new hospitals the largest number opened
in any one year and the considerable expansion of the work of anti-inoculation.
This is directly due to the energies of the staff.

In August 1920 the revised rules under the Glanders and Farcy Act were
finally sanctioned by Government.

During the year the orders of Government regarding the revision of the
rates of pay of both the Veterinary Staff and the Clerical Establishment were
received with much satisfaction.

That the honour of Khan Saheb was conferred upon Mr. Buxy was a
matter of gratification to the whole department.
