                     Contagious diseases in other animals.

11. As usual no reports from revenue officers were received, but an
outbreak of Anthrax in sheep from Ahmedadad was brought to light by the
staff; this outbreak of Anthrax was reported to the Secretary of the Wool
Association, Bombay.

Pleuro-pneumonia in Sheep and Goats was also reported from Broach
District.

Spirochœtosis among fowls was reported by the Veterinary Assistant,
Broach.

Forty-eight cases of rabies in dogs were dealt with by the Veterinary
Staff and 23 brains were sent to the Bacteriological Laboratory, Parel, for
examination.

                                 Preventive measures.

Table III.

12. The number of cattle inoculated against rinderpest amounted to

55,725. These inoculations were carried out in only
427 outbreaks out of 792 attended by the staff.

In the outbreaks in which inoculation was performed 5,520 uninoculated
animals and 404 inoculated animals died.

13. Out of 122 outbreaks attended, in only 29 outbreaks of Hæmorrhagic
Septicæmia inoculation was performed upon 4,180 animals.

Vaccination against this disease was carried out in 4 villages on 1,326
animals.

During the course of the outbreaks in which inoculation was performed
339 uninoculated, and 11 inoculated animals died. There were no deaths
amongst the vaccinated animals.

14. In 7 outbreaks 383 animals were protected against Anthrax out of
which only one died.

15. One hundred animals were vaccinated for Black-quarter at the Tegur
Cattle Farm in Dharwar District with no deaths.

16. This year Rs. 769-3-8 were recovered for inoculation against
Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia and Anthrax as against Rs. 510-14-8 last year.

17. The work of inoculation has made very considerble progress and
can be regarded as satisfactory as indicating not only a growing faith in this
method of dealing with disease but an increasing desire on the part of the
people to save their cattle. The time is still distant when the actual influence
of inoculation on the mortality will manifest itself in our statistics. There
is no doubt however that by this means a large number of animals are saved.
In all the cattle camps instituted for famine relief rinderpest appeared and was
successfully kept under control by means of inoculation.

                                   Other diseases.

Table IV.

18. The number of villages visited by 73 Veterinary Assistants was 4,460

against 3,085 by 65 Veterinary Assistants last year.
During their tours they treated 30,660 cases of

contagious disease (chiefly Foot and Mouth and Rinderpest) and 12,675 non-
contagious cases. The number of castrations performed on tour was 1,078.

Investigation.

19.  During the year 421 specimens were sent by the Veterinary Assist-
ants to the Sir D. M. Petit Patho-Bacteriological Laboratory, Parel, for
examination and 19 for the College Museum.
