REVIEW BY THE DIRECTOR OF AGRICULTURE.

Below letter No. 3127 of 24th June 1914 from the Superintendent, Civil
Veterinary Department, Bombay Presidency, Poona, to the Under Secretary
to Government, Revenue Department, Bombay.

                                     No. A—6778 of 1914

                                                                           Poona, 20th July 1914.

Forwarded with compliments.

2.  During the year under report the prevalence of cattle disease was
about normal except in the case of foot and mouth disease which was exceptionally
wide-spread. Veterinary Assistants attended a large number of outbreaks of
disease, but the failure in the supply of rinderpest serum prevented progress
in the inoculation campaign.

3.  Four new dispensaries were opened, which brings the total of new
dispensaries up to fifteen during the five years since the Department was reor-
ganised. During that period also the number of sick animals treated annually
has doubled, and the number of villages visited by Veterinary Assistants has
increased fourfold.

4.  The Chharodi Farm has been steadily improved of late years and
represents a valuable property. It is hoped that its annual balance sheet will
soon show an improvement.

5.  Local Bodies maintained 36 stud bulls, but there is nothing on record
to show how far their services were of value to breeders. The question of making
good stud bulls available for breeders is a difficult one, and the Superintendent,
Civil Veterinary Department, has been asked to go into the matter.

6.  The Department has developed considerably under Colonel Maxwell,
who has now retired after three years' careful superintendence in this Presidency.

                                                                              G. F. KEATINGE,

                                                                           Director of Agriculture.
