Sir,
I have the honour to submit herewith the Annual Administration Report
of the Glanders and Farcy Department for the year 1913-14.
2. During the year under report 48 horses were seized under the Act and
taken to the Lazaretto as against 35 last year. Of these, 36 were found to be
diseased within the meaning of the Act and dealt with accordingly. Of the
36 diseased animals 13 were cases of Glanders, 2 Epizootic Lymphangitis and
21 Surra. Of the 21 cases of Surra three were subjected to the Arsenic
treatment and one recovered.
3. The following table shows the number of cases of the various diseases
dealt with this year under the Act as compared with former years :—

4.Of the 48 horses seized under the Act 4 belonged to Arab dealers, 16
to private individuals, 28 to owners of carriages plying for hire.
Of the 13 horses suffering from Glanders 3 belonged to Arab dealers, 6 to
owners of carriages plying for hire and 4 to private individuals. Of the 2
horses suffering from Epizootic Lymphangitis, 1 belonged to an owner of a
carriage plying for hire and 1 to the Bombay Mounted Police. Of the 21
horses suffering from Surra 7 belonged to private individuals and 14 to owners
of carriages plying for hire.
5.Of the 48 horses admitted to the Lazaretto, 39 were Arabians,
1 Australian and 8 Country-breds, Of the animals diseased 29 were Arabians
and 6 Country-bred and 1 Australian.
6.All the 48 horses seized were seized within the City of Bombay. No
horse was seized in the harbour and no horse was seized in Bándra.
7.During the year under report 4,794 horses were imported into Bombay
as against 4,952 horses and 8 donkeys and 83 mules last year and 5,489 horses,
4 donkeys and 2 mules in the preceding year.
The following table shows the numbers and class of horses imported
during the year as compared with former years :—
