     ANNUAL ADMINISTRATION REPORT OF THE
          CIVIL VETERINARY DEPARTMENT, SIND,
                         FOR THE YEAR 1931-32.

                    GENERAL ADMINISTRATION.

Mr. J. H. G. Jerrom, I.V.S., held charge of the office of Superin-
tendent, Civil Veterinary Department, Sind and Rajputana,
throughout the year under report. He inspected all the Veterinary
Dispensaries in Sind with the exception of Kandkot and when
possible, attended outbreaks of contagious disease. He was on tour
in Sind for 76 days as against 58 days last year. In addition, he
remained nine days on tour in Rajputana, and attended the meeting
of the Advisory Board of the Imperial Council of Agricultural
Research held at Simla in June 1931.

                    I—VETERINARY INSTRUCTION.

2. There were six scholars studying at the Bombay Veterinary
College at the beginning of the year. Three scholars failed in the
annual examinations and their scholarship was discontinued. There
were thus three scholars studying at the end of the year.

                    II—TREATMENT OF DISEASE.

3.    Table I.—During the year under report, outbreaks of conta-
gious disease were reported from each district of the province. The
total mortality reported was 29,347 against 13,375 in the previous
year.

                         (i) Equine Contagious Disease.

4.    Surra.—There were 24 cases of Surra reported, out of which
8 horses were successfully treated in the Karachi, Hyderabad and
Sukkur districts and the remaining died or were destroyed under
the Glanders and Farcy Act XIII of 1899.

5.    Anthrax.—Two cases of Anthrax were reported from the
Larkana district and all died. The disease could not be confirmed
as there were no cases when the Veterinary Assistant Surgeon
visited the scene of outbreak.

6.    Other contagious diseases.—Thirty-two cases of Piroplasmosis
were reported from Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Upper Sind
Frontier and Larkana districts out of which 7 died and 25 were
cured. Fifty-four cases of strangles were reported with no deaths.

                    (ii) Bovine Contagious Disease.

7.    Rinderpest.—There were 1,205    outbreaks of rinderpest
reported from all the districts in Sind.    53,782 head of cattle were
attacked and 27,130 died as against 490  outbreaks, 28,109 attacks
and 10,455 deaths in the previous year.
