Thar Parkar, disposed of an Arab pony stallion which was not popular
among the zamindars. The stallions covered 445 mares during the
year as against 472 mares in the previous year. The aggregate cost
of their maintenance was Rs. 5,832 of which Government contri-
buted Rs. 2,912-7-0.

Financial.

9. The total expenditure of the Department amounted to
Rs. 1,84,546 as against Rs. 1,27,740 in the
previous year.

General Remarks.

The interest taken in the work of the Department by Local
Bodies is reflected in the increase in
expenditure incurred by them over last year
of Rs. 41,667 and it is regrettable that Government have not found
it possible to keep pace with their requirements. It is parti-
cularly unfortunate that the touring of the Assistant Surgeons had
to be curtailed and that stallions could not be purchased owing to
lack of funds. New dispensaries are also urgently required and it is
hoped that suitable provision will be made in the next year's budget
for these items.

The sanction of Government to the import of live stock at the
port of Karachi should increase the supply of good horses in the
Province. Draft rules have been recently submitted for the
approval of Government.

The construction of a lazeretto at Karachi is urgently required
and although the plans and estimates have been sanctioned and the
land acquired, funds have not yet been made available. The
Commissioner considers that this work should be given a very high
place in the list of Major Works for 1928.

Mr. Jerrom administered the department efficiently and tactfully
and Khan Sahib Buxy, while acting for him, carried out the duties
satisfactorily.
