17. Babies. - Forty-four dogs were attacked and all died or were
destroyed in the districts of Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Upper
Sind Frontier and Larkana.
18. Four dogs bitten by other rabid dogs were successfully
treated at Shikar pur and Hyderabad with Anti-Rabic Vaccine
obtained from the Haffkine Institute, Bombay.
19. Rinderpest.—Eighty sheep and goats were reported to have
been affected and 60 died, but the cases were not confirmed as the
disease had died out when the Veterinary Assistant Surgeon arrived
at the scene of the outbreak.
20. Anthrax.- Sixteen sheep and goats were reported to have
been attacked with and died of Anthrax in the Nawabshah district
but the disease could not be confirmed as there was no case to be
seen for examination when an officer of this department reached
the scene of the outbreak.
21. Other Contagious Diseases.—Comprised Parasitic Gastritis,
Variola, Mange, Piroplasmosis, Distemper, Influenza and Parasitic
Bronchitis. Two thousand one hundred and eighty-three animals
were affected and 640 died.
(iv) Preventive Inoculations
Table III.
22. In 15 outbreaks of Rinderpest, 3,754 animals were
inoculated with Anti-Rinderpest Protective
Serum as compared with 2,634 inoculations
performed in the previous year. In the course of these outbreaks,
218 uninoculated and 20 inoculated animals died.
23. One thousand eight hundred and ninety-eight animals were
inoculated with Hæmorrhagic Septicæmia Serum in 14 outbreaks,
as compared with 946 inoculations performed, in the previous year.
One hundred and twenty-one uninoculated animals died in the
course of these outbreaks and 4 deaths occurred amongst the
inoculated animals.
(v) Other Diseases
Table IV.
24. The number of villages visited by the Veterinary Assistant
Surgeons was 1,675 against 1,670 in the
previous year. During their tours, they
treated 4,860 cases for contagious and 2,368 cases for non-contagious
diseases, and performed 58 castrations; against 3,048 cases for
contagious and 1,821 for non-contagious diseases and 23 castrations
performed in the previous year.
(vi) Investigations
25. During the year under report, 122 specimens from suspi-
cious cases of Surra, Piroplasmosis, Hæmorrhagic Spticæmia,
Mange, Lymphangitis, Dourine, Filaria and Glanders were submitted
by the Subordinate staff to the Superintendent, Civil Veterinary
Department, Sind and Rajputana, for examination; and of these,
71 were confirmed. In addition, 14 brains from cases of Rabies
were submitted for examination to the Haffkine Institute, Bombay.
