Sir,
I have the honour to submit the Annual Administration Report
of the Bombay City and Harbour Veterinary Department for the
year 1922-23, dealing with Equine diseases scheduled under the
Glanders and Farcy Act within the Town and Island of Bombay,
Bandra Municipality, and Bombay Harbour and with the work
performed under the Live Stock Importation Act.
2. I held charge throughout the year under report.
3. During the year 54 horses were destroyed under the Glan-
ders and Farcy Act as under :—
(i) Glanders.—There were 25 cases detected during the current
year, 18 of which were clinical and 7 non-clinicals against
56 (34 clinical and 22 non-clinical) in 1921-22 and ten
(8 clinical and two non-clinical) in 1920-21. Of the 25 cases
of Glanders, three belonged to Arab dealers, five to private
individuals, 11 to owners of carriages plying for hire and
six were ownerless. By caste they were two Walers, eight
Arabs and 15 country breds.
(ii) Epizootic Lymphangitis.—There were ten cases of this
disease in this year as against five in last year and 1 in the
preceding year. Of these cases five belonged to owners of
carriages plying for hire and five were ownerless. Of these
one was Arab and nine country breds.
(iii) Surra.—There were 19 cases during the year under report
as against 31 last year and eight in the preceding year. Of
these cases one belonged to an Arab dealer, ten to private
individuals, seven to owners of carriages plying for hire and
one was ownerless. Of these three were Walers, seven
Arabs and nine country breds.
4. During the year under report 2,981 horses, and 11 mules
were imported into Bombay as against 3,069 horses, one mule and
three donkeys and one zebra last year and 4,622 horses, 69 mules,
two donkeys and 5 zebras in the preceding year.
