                               BREEDING OPERATIONS.

23.  Table VI. A.—According to the reports furnished by the Veterinary
Assistant Surgeons there were 8 breeding bulls belonging to Government and
7 to local bodies at the beginning of the year. 2 Government bulls died leaving
6 Government bulls and 7 bulls belonging to local bodies at the end of the year
under report. Most of these bulls are kept with private individuals where they
are presumably giving useful service in the improvement of the breed of cattle.
The Director of Veterinary Services, Sind has little opportunity of seeing the
results and the figures of service of most of the bulls are not available.

24.  Table VI-B.—No buffalo bulls belonging to Government or loca
bodies are in Ajmer-Merwara.

25.  Table VI-C.—There are no equine breeding operations carried out
under official supervision in Ajmer-Merwara.

                                  FAIRS AND SHOWS.

26. Table VIICattle Fair.—In the cattle show held at Pushkar, in con-
junction with the Horse show, 260 animals competed and Rs. 470 were awarded
in prizes as against 245 animals and Rs. 412 in 1937-38.

27.  Table XII.—At the Pushkar Horse Show held, as usual, during the
year under report, 388 animals were entered and Rs. 560 and two medals were
awarded as prizes as against 231 entries and Rs. 569 and 2 medals awarded in
1937-38.

          IV. SUBORDINATE VETERINARY ESTABLISHMENT.

28.  Table X.—There were three Veterinary Assistant Surgeons employed,
in charge of dispensaries at the beginning of the year. Khan Sahib Abdul
Haq proceeded on leave and retired during the year and from June 1938 to
March 1939 the Veterinary Dispensaries at Ajmer and Beawar remained in
charge of Mr. U. K. Asnani, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon transferred from
Beawar to Ajmer. At the close of the year there were two Veterinary Assis-
tant Surgeons and one post was vacant. It has, however, since been filled.

              V. EXPENDITURE OF THE DEPARTMENT.

29.  Table IX.—The expenditure of the Department was Rs. 9,594 as
against Rs. 10,467 in the previous year.

                           VI. GENERAL REMARKS.

30.  It is felt that the present arrangement under which the Director of
Veterinary Services, Sind visits Ajmer-Merwara once a year for inspection of
the Veterinary Dispensaries is not satisfactory and that there should be closer
supervision of the work of the staff. Cattle breeding operations have also
been started and there must be many questions which could be better dealt.
