non-contagious diseases of animals written in vernaculars were dis-
tributed to persons interested who attended the fairs and shows.
Lectures were delivered by the subordinate staff of the department
at the same time and at other centres, when necessary. Demon-
strations by lantern slides or cinema films are, however, considered
very important for propaganda work but they cannot be arranged
for until the financial condition is improved. Lectures delivered by
the subordinate staff at the different agriculture and other schools
have beneficial effects on the rural population by way of propa-
ganda and are being continued.

Casualty amongst
staff.

36. There were 3 cases of deaths amongst the subordinate staff
and one of retirement on superannuation pension
during the year. There was one case of a veteri-
nary assistant surgeon who resigned service to
take up appointment in Behar.

Foreign scholarships.

37. No foreign scholarship was awarded during the year. Mr.
Lakshmi Sahai, the first of the six State scholars
who were receiving veterinary training abroad
and who returned to India duly qualified, was appointed as a tem-
porary Deputy Superintendent at Basti in an officiating vacancy.

Indian scholarships.

38. Five new candidates were selected for training during the
year and were sent to the Bengal Veterinary
College as stipendiary students. Out of the
United Provinces students already under training, two failed to pass
the final year examination but were allowed to continue for another
year.

Tours of veterinary
inspectors.

39. The veterinary inspectors toured for 180 days each on an
average during the year. They travelled 33,259
miles by rail and 18,470 by road, visiting 2,067
villages at an aggregate in the course of their
tours.
