Anti-rabic treatment.

21. Thirty-one cases of rabies were either treated with anti-
rabic vaccine or kept under observation at the
Isolation Ward attached to -the headquarters
laboratory with satisfactory results.

Experiments and in-
vestigations on diseases.

22. Experiments were carried out on " Surra " with successful
results in Tehri Garhwal State with Bayer 205
" Naganol ". This disease broke out in Septem-
ber 1931, amongst the transport mules and the treatment was started
in January 1932. The cases treated were of 2 to 4 months' stand-
ing. There were 22 mules at the time of investigation, 10 of which
were found infected and their treatment was undertaken by intra-
thecal and intravenous injections, resulting in 8 cures and 2 deaths
from the toxic reaction of the drug. This experiment has opened a
new field of work against Surra and it is hoped that in the near future
when Ave have more veterinary assistant surgeons properly trained in
the carrying out of the treatment, the present system of destruction
of Surra cases by compensating the poorer owners can be replaced
by protection and treatment by this method.

Consequent on a heavy mortality having been reported from the
Balrampur Estate caused by hydatid disease in sheep, an inquiry
as to its causes was instituted and measures for their protection from
parasitic diseases were prescribed.

A case of rejuvenation operation was performed on a jack stallion
at the stallion dépôt at Moradabad by gland-grafting process but it
did not meet with any success. More such operations will be carried
out when opportunity occurs until when, the result of such operations
may be awaited.

Controlled experiments were carried out on the treatment of
Fascioliasis (Liver-fluke) in cattle with Danistol, kindly supplied
free by the Imperial Institute of Veterinary Research, Muktesar, in
the Almora district with 91.2 per cent. of success. Mortality in
the controls was found to be 97.1 per cent. In view of the prohibitive
cost of the drug, which, if purchased, would amount to Rs. 14 per
animal, further experiments were subsequently made with a much
cheaper drug " Carbon Tetrachloride " and experiments with this
drug are still in progress in that district. Experiments on this
disease were also satisfactorily made in the district of Meerut and
'" Carbon Tetrachloride " has been found to be a specific remedy for
the disease if cautiously given.
