                                        CHAPTER II.

                            TREATMENT OF DISEASE.
                                    Contagious diseases.

Mortality.—Table II.

2.    During the year under report the reported mortality resulting
from diseases under this heading has been com-
paratively small, the total mortality being 26,093
as compared with 41,192 in the previous year. This low death rate
goes to show that cattle owners are beginning to realize the advantages
of inoculation in cases of epidemics.

                                            (a) Equine.

3,     Under this head the reported mortality amongst camels is includ-
ed, This is a new addition to the schedule this year.

Glanders and farcy.—
Table II.

4. Three cases of glanders were confirmed in the district of Allaha-
bad. The animals were destroyed and the owners
compensated under the Glanders and Farcy Act.

Anthrax.

5. No case of this disease was reported during
the year.

Surra.—Table II.

6. Cases appeared in only five districts as against twelve last year, nine-
teen cases were microscopically confirmed, nine of
which were camels. The owners of the animals re-
ceived compensation in accordance with the rules under the Glanders and
Farcy Act as applied to Surra. A treatment for this disease, which promises
success, has been discovered at Muktesar and it is hoped that this treat-
ment will in future be carried out with good results in this province.

Dourine.

7. No case of this disease has been discovered
during the year.

Other contagious
diseases.—Table II.

8. There were only 68 cases diagnosed under this head, as compared
with 122 in the previous year. Such diseases as
strangles, tetanus, influenza, piroplasmosis etc., are
included under this head.

                                            (b) Bovine.

Rinderpest.—Table II.

9. This disease was much less virulent than in the previous year and
was therefore not responsible for as great mor-
tality. It appeared in all districts of the province,
but only in the districts of Kheri, Bahraich, and Partabgarh did the
number of cases rise to over a thousand and in thirteen districts it was less
than a hundred. In the Garhwal district the number was only 81, a
negligible total when compared with 3,408 and 8,365 in the two
previous years. The smallest number of deaths caused by rinderpest in
any district during the year was twelve in Naini Tal. In the year before
it was 144, Propaganda work is being carried out as much as possible in
all districts to teach the cultivating classes the importance of averting the
spread of contagious diseases by adopting simple measures such as the
segregation of newly imported animals and the prompt reporting of
outbreaks.

Anti-rinderpest inocu-
lations.—Table III.

10, The number of inoculations carried out was 88,166 as compared
with 1,83,995 in the preceding year. Two hundred
and eighty-one inoculations by the serum simulta-
neous method were carried out at the Madhurikund
