16.    Mange.—This is another disease which is brought in an advanced
stage for treatment, and there is usually a severe dermatitis present, which
takes some time to eradicate.

17.    Pneumonia Contagiosa—Occurred in Pakpattan tahsil, and
accounted for 7 deaths out of 12 attacked. The five recoveries were due to
veterinary assistants' management and treatment.

                                             Bovines.

Table II.

18.    25,030 deaths from contagious diseases were reported in the
province against 23,197 last year. The increase is clue
to deaths from hæmorrhagic septicæmia.

19.    Rinderpest—Was reported from every district in the Punjab. The
mortality was 12,713 against 12,924 last year.

Preventive inoculation—
Table III.

20.    29,254 inoculations were performed in 19 districts, and in 189
outbreaks only 40 animals died after inoculation. In
some of these the disease must have been in the incubative
period whilst in others it was already developed. The

latter were inoculated at the express wish of the owner. Unfortunately
the supply of serum was stopped from October 1913 to February 1914 on
account of a breakdown of the centrifuges at the imperial bacteriological labo-
ratory. Had the serum been available, many more animals would have been
inoculated, and the mortality would probably have been still further reduced.
In the central circle alone 38,730 doses of anti-rinderpest serum and
1,783 doses of hæmorrhagic septicæmia serum could not be supplied. Dur-
ing the above-stated period only 1,000 doses of anti-rinderpest serum were sup-
plied to the south Punjab circle.

21.    Foot and mouth disease—Was reported from almost every district in
the Punjab; 706 deaths occurred against 323 last year. The percentage of
deaths from this disease is very small. It has been discovered that the reports
of deaths from this disease are incorrect, and that the animals have died from
other causes. This disease is the great cause of pedal deformities.

Table II.

- 22. Hœmorrhagic septicœmia.—This disease was reported from every dis-
trict in the Punjab, and as usual was the cause of consider-
able mortality. 10,663 animals died as compared with
8,676 last year. This disease is most prevalent on low-lying land and river
banks. The people have been advised to keep their cattle from these 'con-
taminated areas until the soil becomes dry again after the rains.

Preventive inoculation
and vaccination, — Table III.

23. 19,311 animals were inoculated with hæmorrhagic septicæmia
serum in 94 outbreaks in 14 districts. 1,025 uninocu-
lated and 13 incoulated animals died. 1,169 animals
were vaccinated in 23 villages in 7 districts.

Table III.

24. Black quarter—Is a disease which generally attacks stock under 3
years of age, but it also attacks animals above this age which
have been bred in areas where the disease is unknown,
and afterwards taken to areas where the disease prevails. Vaccination, as a
preventive against the disease, was performed on 1,394 animals, of which 848
belonged to the Muzaffargarh district. Preventive measures against this
disease are not well known to the Indians, and in consequence much more
difficulty is experienced in this direction than in the case of rinderpest
inoculation. The same remark applies to hæmorrhagic septicæmia.

25. Anthrax.—-Two cases of this disease were reported from Mianwali,
and both were microscopically confirmed by Mr. Woodley.

Investigation of diseases.

26. 149 specimens were received and examined by the chief super-
intendent, and 191 and 152 by the superintendents, north
and south Punjab, respectively. Interesting specimens
and photos have been sent to the veterinary college for the benefit of the
students.
