*Out of the 24 deaths in the Futtehpore Jail, 13 were caused by sloughing ulcer, and occurred among transfers from the Allahabad Central Jail. Besides these
deaths at Futtehpore, 34 prisoners died from sloughing ulcers in the Allahabad Jail.

        †Six of these deaths were caused by diphtheria, from which disease there were 37 admissions. In the Peshawur Jail five deaths were returned under the head
of laryngitis, and in the Rawulpindee Jail seven. In these jails erysipelas and hospital gangrene also prevailed, causing seven deaths in each.

        ‡In the Rawulpindee Jail an epidemic of typhus caused 215 admissions and 27 deaths, according to the returns. It is probable that all the fever deaths of the
early months, 42 in number, were due to the same influence. The phenomena of culmination and decay are the same observed in nearly all outbreaks of typhus:—Deaths—January, none; February, 3; March, 23; April, 10; May, 4; June, 2; July, none. The epidemic fever of the Rawulpindee Jail of the later mouths, in the course of
which 49 deaths occurred, was not distinguished by the characteristics of typhus.
