PREFACE.
By direction of the Secretary of State for India, the Annual Returns of
the Native Armies of Madras and Bombay and the Jail Statistics of these
Presidencies, will in future be arranged on the plan followed in this Volume,
and incorporated with this Series of Tables.
The Returns of the Six Years from 1871 to 1876, for the European Army of
India and for the Native Army and Jail Population of the Bengal Presidency,
appear in this Volume. The Volume in succession to which it is published,
in which were contained the Returns of the Armies and Jails of Bengal from
the Mutiny Year up to 1870, was issued in 1871.
