MEDICAL AND SANITARY REPORT OF THE NATIVE ARMY OF BENGAL.
Location and
movements.
II. Location and movements.— The head-quarters have been at Peshawar during the year, with
the exception of 15 days, from 15th April to the 30th April, when the regiment marched out
to Fort Mackeson, where they were employed in the operations undertaken for the protection
of the grass-cutters, while the latter were engaged in cutting the crops belonging to some
recalcitrant Afridi tribes.
The regiment furnished detachments as follows:

Lines.
V. Lines, &c. —Described in the report for 1875. They remain the same faultily con-
structed and wretchedly ventilated buildings as therein described. The state of repair
seems fairly good. When a company is going through its musketry course, and every man
is present at night, there is decided overcrowding.
Drainage.
VI. Drainage. —Described in previous reports.
Conservancy
and latrines.
VII. Conservancy and latrines.— Described in report for 1875. The same system is in
use still, and seems to work satisfactorily.
Water-supply,
&c.
The water-supply, diet and clothing have been described in previous reports, and call for
no remarks.
Duty &c.
XI. Duty and employment. —The duty does not seem to be very severe. Nights in bed
6.41 in 7.
Marches and
service.
XIII. Marches and service —"On the 16th April 1876, the regiment marched to Fort
Mackeson, a part of the Imovable column, and on the 17th was engaged in protecting civil
reapers against the Adam Kheyl Afridis near Aimal Choobutra. Its casualties were—

Slightly „ | 4 | Sepoys. |
On 1st May the regiment returned to Peshawar." The above is extracted from the history
of the regiment recently compiled.

XIV. Hospital. —Has been frequently described; the arrangements for heating and light-
ing it are particularly defective.

Mortality.
VII. Principal causes of mortality. —Cholera caused 3 deaths. Pneumonia, sunstroke,
remittent fever, diarrhœa, ague and gunshot wound of the spine, 1 each. The cause in three
causes is unknown.
