Composition by Age and Length
of Service of the Army of 1876.

   The Army of 1876 had 47 per cent. of its strength resident from one to four years; 75
per cent. had been seven years or less in the country; and 9.6
of the whole were men whose residence exceeded ten years.

   In relation to age, 3 per cent. of the Army exceeded 40;
and 17 per cent. were from 35 upwards. Reckoning the soldier old at 30, 100 men of the
strength were made up thus:—

  Young soldiers. Mature soldiers. Old soldiers.
Below 24. 25 to 29. 30 and upwards.
