CALCUTTA MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS.

29

Cholera does not appear to have been confined to any one part of the European quarter
of the town, but to have occurred here and there. There were four admissions from ships
at the Calcutta moorings. The months of greatest prevalence of cholera were March, April,
and December.

Water-supply.—The water used for drinking and culinary purposes is brought from
Calcutta daily. That for cooking and other purposes is obtained locally. The supply is
abundant and pure:

Buildings.—The buildings are all in good repair. There are numerous defects in the
main building, involving loss of space and inconvenience in details; but these are more than
compensated for by the excellence of the site, and the good elevation of the building and
the abundance of window space in all the wards.

Medicines and instruments.—The supply of medicines and surgical apparatus has been
satisfactory, and the quality of the medicines was all that could be desired.

Remedies.—The only matter of note, in reference to the use of remedies, is the good
results which have followed the use of the "bath" in fever. The temperature of the bath
has been varied to the requirements of each case, while in the milder forms of fever a tempera-
ture commencing with 100° and going down to 85° has answered. Much lower degrees of cold,
obtainable only with the aid of ice, has been necessary in the high temperatures, accompanied
with effusion usually seen in the hot weather.

The best results have followed the use of the bath in fever cases.

Municipality—The Municipal grant to the hospital was increased from Rs. 200 to 250 in
April last.
