MEDICAL COLLEGE HOSPITAL.

Superintendent.

         DR. COATES furnishes the report of this Hospital. He held the office of
Principal of the Medical College from March 17th to the end of the year.
For the previous part of the year, Dr. D. B Smith held the same office.

House-patients
treated.

         2. The total number of house-patients treated was, Christians 2,189,
natives 2,242, or an increase of 613 over the previous year. The mortality
was 480, or at the rate of 108.3 per 1,000, as compared with 136.1 in 1876,
152.7 in 1875, 125.3 in 1874, 128.5 in 1873, 115.8 in 1872, 126.2 in 1871, and
138.7 in 1870; or, in other words, the rate of mortality was 108.3 per 1,000 in
1877 against 129 per 1,000, which was the average of the seven previous years.
But of the deaths in hospital 83, or 17.3 per cent., occurred in moribund
patients.

Christians.

         Among the Christian patients there were 429 cases of fever, of which 13
were fatal, or 30 per 1,000. There were 76 cases of dysentery and 6 deaths,
or 78.9 per mille. There were 22 cases of cholera and 14 deaths, or 636.3 per
1.000.

Natives.

         Among native patients there were 308 cases of fever and 29 deaths, or
94.12 per 1,000. The deaths from dysentery 36 out of 138 cases, or 260.8
per 1,000. There were 84 cases of cholera with 46 deaths, or 547.6 per 1,000.
