ANNUAL REPORT OF THE
Nineteen students compose the first-year class.
The young men of this Department are, as a rule, well conducted and attentive
to their duties. On the whole they have made fair progress.
The percentage of marks gained by the students of this class is as follows:—
Anatomy | 68 |
Materia Medica | 86½ |
Physiology | 82 |
Minor Surgery | 70 |
Practical Pharmacy | 85 |
Mr. Gomes, who received courses of instruction in Chemistry, Materia Medica,
Pharmacy and Practical Chemistry, having appeared before a Board of Examiners,
was declared qualified to undertake the duties of Chemist and Druggist.
MEDALS.—Civil Hospital Apprentice G. A. E. Newland is the Johnstone
Medallist of this year. The medal is given for general proficiency; to him the
Blacklock Medal also has been adjudged for marked proficiency in Clinical Surgery.
This young man is held in high estimation by his teachers for his continued
diligence and exceptionally good behaviour during his collegiate career.
The Government Gold Medal has not been granted this year.
LIBRARY.—Seventy-two volumes have been added to the Library of reference
during the past year. The number of volumes now in it amounts to 5,615.
MUSEUM.—Forty-five specimens have been contributed to the Museum during
the session.
The Clerk of the College, Mr. J. R. DeSilva, is a steady hard-working public
servant. He thoroughly understands his business and has given me every satis-
faction.
The Librarian, P. Narrainsawmy Moodelliar, and the Draughtsman, M. Moone-
sawmy Moodelly, have both worked well and rendered satisfaction.
Finally I have cordially to thank the Professors and Assistant Professors of
the College for the help they have rendered me in matters affecting the College and
its students.

REPORT OF THE FINAL EXAMINATION BOARD, 1878.
The Board has carefully examined eleven students of the Second Department,
Madras Medical College, and four female students, and forwards herewith the
results. The examination, in the prescribed subjects, was held on the 17th, 18th
and 19th June.
2. All the candidates have passed. The total number of marks obtainable was
890; the highest number obtained was 738, the lowest 511.
3. Three female students out of four, and one male student out of eleven, are
placed, as the rule requires, in the first division. The names and marks are as
follows:—

4. While approving generally the new system of marking, now for the first
time applied in this examination, the Board ventures to think that the placing of
candidates in the first division might be left, in some degree, to the discretion of
the Examiners. It might, the Board suggests, be left to the Examiners to
