439. Ismailia.-The following table gives the record of cases of malaria
at Ismailia since 1877 as given by Dr. Pressat. Malaria has disappeared since
the introduction of anti-malaria sanitation :-

440. Panama.-Since the commencement of work at Panama there has
been an extraordinary reduction both in the total amount of sickness and
mortality, and that recorded from malaria. Gorgas describing the present
conditions, says :
" Our death-rate for the total population on the Zone has fallen from
" a maximum of 67.72 per 1,000 in July 1906 to 21.52 in December 1909.
The rate for 1905 was 49.94; 1906-48.37 ; 1907-33.63 ; 1908-24.83 ;
"1909-18.19 (per thousand). The death-rate among employees from
" disease has fallen from a maximum of 62.15 in July 1906 to 1013 in
" December 1909."
Referring specially to the results of the special work against malaria
Gorgas says :
" It has reduced the deaths from malaria in the total population from
"a maximum of 16.21 per 1,000 in July 1906 to 2.58 per 1,000 in
"December 1909. Among employees it has reduced the deaths from
"malaria from a maximum of 11.59 per 1,000 in November 1906 to 1.23
" per 1,000 in December 1909. The admission rate among employees has
" fallen from a maximum of 1,263 per 1,000 in July 1906 to 191 per
"1,000 in December 1909. The admission rate per thousand among
" employees has been as follows :-1914-125 ;-1905-514; 1906-821;
" 1907-424 ; 1908-282 ; 1909-215."
