| Description | This drawing reads, ‘From a sketch made by Captain Columbine 1792’. This copy is thought to have been made in 1802, at Hutton’s request. It is one of two records of Scalloway, the other being a written description left by Columbine. The Castle was built in 1600 by Patrick Stewart, who was the grandson of James V. His father, Robert Stewart was the natural son of James, who granted his illegitimate son the earldom of Orkney along with lands on Shetland. Unlike many of the buildings on Shetland which tended to reflect the very mixed cultural inheritance of the island, this building is a traditional lowland ‘z’ shaped tower house. |
