| Description | Drawing of the Carmelite Church, South Queensferry. There is no artist's name attached to this sketch. You can see the ruined state of the nave here, although they rebuilt it in 1889. There is some controversy surrounding the origins of the Carmelite Order, with many researchers believing it has a direct link to early Christianity. However, the first official record of the order is dated 1155. The Carmelite Order began as a contemplative, hermetical lifestyle, although community living became more popular in the thirteenth century. It remains one of the most strict and extreme of the mendicant houses. This establishment at Queensferry is one of twelve houses founded in Scotland. |
