| Description | Scotlandwell Friary, Kinross-shire. The drawing reads, 'October 17th, 1789', but is unsigned. It is the only drawing or sketch relating to Scotlandwell in the Hutton Collection. Scotlandwell, to the east of Loch Leven in Kinross-shire, takes its name from the well or spring around which it was built. Trinitarians (also known as Mathurines, or Red Friars) were gifted a hospital, on the site of an earlier Celtic religious foundation, in the thirteenth century. The friars used the spring water to cure various diseases, and Robert the Bruce is reputed to have visited the friary seeking a cure for his leprosy. Today, only the foundations and a few gravestones remain of the friary. |
