| Description | Tantallon Castle ruins, East Lothian. This view is painted from the interior courtyard of the castle and captures the stunning view the inhabitants would have enjoyed. Most of the building remains date from the fourteenth century, with the overall appearance based on French chateau architecture. Originally, in the possession of the Earls of Fife, Tantallon is now better known as a stronghold of the Douglas family. In 1389, the castle passed to the Earl of Angus, a Red Douglas, but after the tenth Earl died in 1588, the castle fell into disuse. The castle was attacked by both the English and Scottish crowns as the Douglas family changed allegiances and whilst asserting their independence. It was eventually inherited by the Dalrymple family, who gifted it to the state in 1924. |
