| Description | This pencil drawing is 'from a sketch by the Reverend Cordiner'. Cordiner, of St Paul's Chapel, Aberdeen, was, between 1799 and 1804, chaplain to the garrison of Colombo in Sri Lanka and principal of all schools on the island. His book 'A Description of Ceylon’ was published in 1807. It is probable that Hutton copied this sketch from Cordiner's original. Elgin Cathedral began as a chapter-house (a meeting place for the governing body of the cathedral) in 1244, and reached its full size by the end of the thirteenth century. The cathedral suffered badly in the Reformation, and was a quarry and a rubbish dump in the nineteenth century. Eventually, the Government took over the site and it is now a popular tourist attraction. |
