| Description | The signature indicates that Alexander Morton in Dunfermline drew this plan in December 1816. Morton's note beneath the title reads, 'the green is old and the red is modern building'. Morton has measured the church, marked as the ‘place of worship’, at 32 feet in length and 19 in breadth. The 'old' walls referred to by Morton in his note, coloured green in the plan, may indicate parts of the church of Abbey St Bathans that were originally part of the Cistercian nunnery of St Mary, founded in 1170 by Ada, Countess of Dunbar or March. Henry VIII's troops burnt the nunnery in 1544. The church later appeared on the same site, incorporating some of the remains. |
