| Description | This is a panoramic view of St Andrews, Fife, 'from an etching by Mr Clark'. You can see both the distinctive church spires and its exposed position. The French frigate the Belle Isle was on a mission round the British coast. Francois Thurot of Boulogne engineered and commanded the expedition. The ship was to harass the British coastline, this act being an initiation of war. This incident was a relatively minor affair compared to the havoc that Thurot wreaked on the Western Isles, Ireland and the Isle of Man, later in 1759. |
