| Description | Although clearly labelled a 'bird's eye view' the rest of the title of this pencil sketch has been smudged and obscured. The sheet, however, depicts a carved slab with warrior and ecclesiastical representations as well as animals and decorative motifs. This sheet is one of series that records many of the ornamental slabs at Saddell Abbey. There is no further information recorded with any of these sheets. Although Saddell Abbey began in 1148 as an ecclesiastical house of the Order of the Cistercians, its patron was the powerful secular lord, Somerled. Much of the information preserved there reveals details of the social life and politics of the day. The warrior class was a powerful element in early medieval society and monuments such as this record many of their attributes, skills and achievements. |
