| Description | This detailed engraving shows Brechin Cathedral with its round tower. The surrounding shrubbery provides a natural frame for the Cathedral. This is one of several drawings of the Cathedral, with its round tower, that appear in the Hutton Collection. The engraving has neither date nor signature, although it is likely that the artist was Hutton himself. Originally a stand-alone building, the round tower was incorporated into the cathedral when the church was built during the thirteenth century. Built in an Irish style, Irish masons probably constructed the Pictish Round Tower in about 1150. The Cathedral's interior boasts some fine Pictish carvings and excellent stained-glass windows, while the ancient graveyard contains many of the victims who died in the terrible plague of the mid-seventeenth century. |
