| Description | These are drawings of stone fragments from St Machar's Cathedral and Bishop Dunbar's Hospital, Aberdeen. This sheet contains two drawings; both credited to 'J.L.A.' and dated 1820. The one to the right is captioned 'Lintel of Bishop Dunbar's Hospital'. The other, to the left, is captioned 'Fragment in the Cathedral Churchyard of Old Aberdeen. The length is 2 feet 7½ and the width is 9½ inches. The signature ‘J.L.A.’ probably stands for 'J. Logan, Aberdeen'. There are a number of drawings by Logan in the Hutton Collection. As well as founding Bishop Dunbar's Hospital, Gavin Dunbar, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1518-32, was instrumental in the development of St Machar's Cathedral. He erected the stone spires that remain to this day, and was responsible for the creation of the cathedral's heraldic ceiling. |
