| Description | West doorway of the Cambuskenneth Abbey Church, Stirlingshire. The drawing is dated 20 July 1789. This image is one of five of Cambuskenneth Abbey which are held in the Hutton Collection. Very little structural evidence of the expansive Cambuskenneth Abbey now remains. The campanile and many of the foundations remain along with this - the arched west entrance to the abbey church. Built sometime during the thirteenth century, this displays all the heavy grandeur, mixed with clean lines which characterise Norman architecture. The church itself would have been a large cruciform shape and the cloisters would have been to the south. |
