| Description | This drawing, dated 1783, depicts the Old Bridge over the River Tay at Perth, as viewed from the east bank and looking south. Although the name of the artist has not been included on the drawing, it is quite likely to have been George Hutton himself. The artist who made this drawing would have been standing upriver, looking down towards the bridge, with the city of Perth clearly visible on the right side of the drawing. Indeed, the spire of St John's Church is quite visible to the right of the bridge. Also known as Smeaton's Bridge, the Old Bridge, was built in 1771. It replaced the ferry that had been operating for 150 years - the original bridge having been destroyed in a flood in 1621. The bridge was named after the engineer who built it, John Smeaton, and took four years to construct at a cost of £26,631 - about £2,129,000 in today's terms. |
