| Description | This drawing of the remains of Soutra Hospital (or Holy Trinity Hospital of Soutra), now known as Soutra Aisle. is dated 1784 but is unsigned by the artist. This is the only drawing of Soutra Hospital in the Hutton Collection. The remains of the twelfth-century hospital at Soutra are located on a high plain about 12 miles south of Dalkeith in Midlothian. The hospital, which was inhabited by Augustinian monks, provided shelter and assistance for the poor and for people travelling between Edinburgh and the borders, as well as medical care for the sick. Soutra may have been the largest medieval hospital in Scotland. Archaeological excavations of the site in the late twentieth century yielded important information on the types of natural remedies used by the monks. |
