| Description | The artist has sketched the remains of a nunnery at Haddington, which by 1784 appears to have been little more than a stone vault. A general impression of the surrounding area, including two buildings, has also been provided. The nunnery was founded in 1178 and was one of three Cistercian houses in the Lothians: the other two being Newbattle Abbey, near Dalkeith, and the nunnery at North Berwick. The Cistercians were also known as the 'white monks' because of the simple white robes they wore. Strictly vegetarian, they divided their days between prayer and physical work that included tending their gardens and orchards. |
