| Description | This sketch, made in July 1789, shows the island in Loch Tay as viewed from the south side of the loch, next to the village of Kenmore. Looking closely at the island, it is possible to see the remains of buildings. Although the name of the artist has not been included on the drawing, it is quite likely to have been George Hutton himself. The island in this sketch is known as Priory Island and also as Eilean Nam Ban, Sybilla's Island or the Isle Of Loch Tay. The island was gifted by Alexander I of Scotland to the monks of Scone Abbey in 1122, as the burial place of his wife, Queen Sybilla. A fort was built on the island during the sixteenth century by the Campbells of Glenorchy, with some of the ruins still standing. This section of Loch Tay is famous for its crannogs (ancient lake dwellings). |
