| Description | Sciennes Convent, Edinburgh, from the south-west. The page, which reads, 14th July 1802, is unsigned by the artist, and may be the work of Hutton himself. In the background of the drawing is the village of Newington, now very much part of Edinburgh and beyond that is the familiar outline of Arthur's Seat. This is one of two views of Sciennes Convent in the Hutton Collection. The area in Edinburgh known as Sciennes may have taken its name from the medieval convent there, dedicated to St Catherine of Siena. The convent housed a community of Dominican nuns. Although it does not appear to have been one of Edinburgh's more significant ecclesiastical foundations, there is a reference to Sciennes Convent in Sir David Lindsay’s poem 'The Complaint of the Papingo'. The convent probably fell into disuse after the Reformation, and its stones helped build Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh, in 1602. |
